New Mobile Site
We have just launched a new mobile version of this site - m.trainspots. This page will use your smart device's GPS to loctate you and guide you to locations that are close to your present location.
Location notes
Grange is located on the north side of Morecambe Bay and is on the line from Carnforth to Barrow-in-Furness.
Railway type and traffic
The regular passenger service is approximately hourly, Currently, Transpennine services are all 185's. Northern Rail uses 153s and 156s with an occasional 142, or a rare 158.
Freight is normally DRS 37s or DRS 20s.
Environment
Grange is a 'Genteel' resort and is popular for retirement so you are unlikely to come across too much trouble. The station used to be on the sea front but over the last 10-20 years the sea/bay has retreated to be replaced by grass which has grown on the mud flats, therefore you have the unusual sight of being able to watch sheep graze from the Promenade. Good views can be had across the bay towards Morecambe and the walk along the Promenade towards Kents Bank is pleasant.
Road directions
From The M6 junction 36
Follow signs to the A590 to Barrow. Grange is well signposted off this road. The entry to Grange is along the B5277 through Lindale and this road passes the station before reaching the town. The A590 also passes Newby Bridge further along which is at the bottom of Lake Windermere and is on the Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway so is easily accessible from the Lake District itself.

Parking
Parking near the station or town should be no problem.
Public transport
Manchester to Barrow trains operate every two hours and in between there are Lancaster to Barrow, Millom and Carlisle workings to provide roughly an hourly service. Stagecoach service X35 operates hourly between Kendal, Grange, Haverthwaite and Barrow.

Accommodation
As with most of the Lake District there are plenty of Guest Houses in the area but in high summer advance booking is recommended.

Photographic notes
The light is best in the morning for trains from Barrow and in the afternoon for trains heading from Lancaster. The station is an old Furness Railway building and is in good condition and photos can be taken either way from the platforms. There are several footbridges/foot crossings along the Promenade, the best being the one to the east of the station just past the signal box [fig 2 and 3]. There is also a small occupation crossing to the east by Holme Island [fig 4 and 5]. To reach this go along the main road from the station east for about 500 yards, then take the lane on the right heading towards Meathrop. Again after about 500 yards there is a small track leading up to the railway with a place to park at the bottom.
