New Mobile Site
We have just launched a new mobile version of this site - m.trainspots. This page will use your smart device's GPS to loctate you and guide you to locations that are close to your present location.
Location notes
Widdrington Station is a small village north of Morpeth on the East Coast Main Line. The separate village of Widdrington is a few miles away.
Railway type and traffic
There is a roughly half-hourly service between Newcastle and Edinburgh, provided by a mix of Voyagers and East Coast HSTs and class 91 hauled sets. There are also Anglo-Scottish Freight services routed via the East Coast. The local service is infrequent.
Environment
Widdrington Station appears to be a village largely made up of a council estate. The station itself is quiet due to the sparse local stopping service.
Road directions
Taking the A1 north from Newcastle, you can either take the A1068 north from the A1/A19 junction near Cramlington, turning left onto the B1337 near Widdrington, or continue north along the A1 to Morpeth, then the A197 towards Pegswood before joining the B1337 heading north which crosses the railway at Widdrington Station.

Parking
There is a small parade of shops to the west of the station and there is a small car park round the back.
Public transport
The rail service to Widdrington is fairly infrequent, but Arriva service 518 runs hourly between Newcastle, Morpeth and Alnwick, taking just over an hour to reach Widdrington from Newcastle.

Photographic notes
The line runs roughly north-south though curves fairly sharply through the station. From late morning the sun is right for south-bound trains passing through the station, and by mid-afternoon both ends can be photographed, the sun slowly making its way round to the rear of the south-bound trains.
